The Austin Area Heritage Council’s MLK Celebration is comprised of several events. The Oratory Competition, MLK Scholarship Awards, and Day of Service lead up to the March and Festival on Monday, January 18th. We would love for you to join us at as many events as possible!
MLK Oratory Competition
Thursday, January 17th @ 6:30pm at the George Washington Carver’s Boyd Vance Theatre
Come out and listen to 4th, 5th & 6th grade students compete in a five-minute speech based on the theme, “As we continue with the legacy of Dr. King and if he were alive today, what dream would you personally discuss with him to promote and deliver to the people of the world in hopes of creating a better place for everyone to live in?” These inspiring young speakers will compete by delivering personally written speeches commemorating Dr. King’s ideals and principals by continuing to encourage his legacy of peace and unity.
MLK Youth Legacy Scholarship Reception
Saturday, January 19th @ 3pm at ACC Eastview Campus, Building 8000, Multipurpose Room
The MLK Youth Scholarship Awards were created to recognize youth in the Austin community for their outstanding commitment and achievement, as well as inspire the next generation. Nominations accepted through December 1st.
MLK Day of Service
Saturday, Jan 19th – Details TBA by Hands on Central Texas
Join in with United Way’s Hands on Central Texas and assist with the general volunteer clean-up of MLK Blvd.
MLK March, Festival, and Food Drive
Monday, Jan 21st @ 9 am at the MLK Statue on UT Campus (23rd street & Speedway)
The Annual Community March celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. The MLK Community March kicks off at 9 a.m.with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus.
We will then march on to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, where exciting activities are planned. All businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
MLK Community Celebration & Music Festival
Monday, Jan 21st @ 11 am at Huston-Tillotson University
The MLK Community Festival kicks off as soon the march arrives on location and will last until 3 p.m.; it will include all types of vendors, food trucks, and local musical artists to make this year’s celebration the best ever!
