About the Event

As part of the 15th annual MLK Celebration, Applied Materials Youth Legacy Awards will recognize high school students throughout Austin for significant accomplishments.

One winner will be chosen in each of the following categories:

  • Arts
  • Athletic Male
  • Athletics Female
  • Community Service
  • Education
  • Fred “Mitchie” Mitchell - Beating the Odds
  • Math and Science – Special 2008 Category selected and awarded by Applied Materials
  • Religion

Judges from local colleges and universities will select winners from a large pool of applicants.

The 2008 YLA awards will be presented at the Youth Legacy Awards Reception hosted by Applied Materials and St. Edward's University. The reception will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at St. Edward's University, Ragsdale Center, Mabee Ballroom at 4:00 p.m.

All nominees should arrive at the Mabee Ballroom at 2:30pm for rehearsal. Lunch will provided for nominees only prior to the start of the program. For more information about this event, please contact Joya Hayes at 512-350-7786 or Brenda Burt at 512-475-7971.

The Youth Legacy Award scholarship funds are made possible due to the generous support of Applied Materials. St. Edward’s University is the home to our annual YLA awards event, and the Austin Area Heritage Council thanks the university for its continued support.

Directions to St. Edwars from Interstate 35

From Southbound I-35 take the Woodward St. exit. From Northbound I-35 exit Ben White and remain on the access road until you reach Woodward St. Head west and in a short distance you will see the campus on the right. There are two entrances from Woodward, the first is Theatre Pass and the second is Andre Drive. Turn right on either entrance and you have arrived.

Directions to St. Edwars from Mopac/Ben White

From southbound Mopac exit Loop 360 and stay on it when it changes to Hwy 71 East. Exit So. Congress Ave. Turn left onto Congress and continue past Woodward to the main campus entrance which is on the right at 3001 S. Congress.
