The Austin Area Heritage Council’s MLK Celebration is comprised of several events. The Oratory Competition, MLK Scholarship Awards, and Day of Service lead up to the March and Festival on Monday, January 18th. We would love for you to join us at as many events as possible!

MLK Oratory Competition
Thursday, January 16th @ 6:30pm at George Washington Carver’s Boyd Vance Theatre
Come out and listen to 4th, 5th & 6th grade students compete in a five-minute speech based on the theme, “As we continue with the legacy of Dr. King and if he were alive today, what dream would you personally discuss with him to promote and deliver to the people of the world in hopes of creating a better place for everyone to live in?” These inspiring young speakers will compete by delivering personally written speeches commemorating Dr. King’s ideals and principals by continuing to encourage his legacy of peace and unity.
MLK Youth Legacy Scholarship Reception
Saturday, January 18th @ 3pm at ACC Eastview Campus, Building 8000, Multipurpose Room
The MLK Youth Scholarship Awards were created to recognize youth in the Austin community for their outstanding commitment and achievement, as well as inspire the next generation.
MLK Day of Service
Saturday, Jan 18th – 9am at United Way for Greater Austin (2000 E MLK Jr Blvd, Austin TX 78702)
Join in with United Way’s Hands on Central Texas and assist with the general volunteer clean-up of MLK Blvd.
MLK March, Festival, and Food Drive
Monday, Jan 20th @ 9 am at the MLK Statue on UT Campus (23rd street & Speedway)
The Annual Community March celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. All businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
The MLK Community March kicks off on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 9 a.m.with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus.
At the conclusion of the program at the MLK Statue, we will march to the south steps of the Capitol for a rally.
After the Capitol program, the march will proceed to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, where exciting activities are planned.
MLK Community Celebration & Music Festival
Monday, Jan 20th @ 11 am at Huston-Tillotson University
The MLK Community Festival kicks off as soon the march arrives on location and will last until 3 p.m.; it will include all types of vendors, food trucks, and local musical artists to make this year’s celebration the best ever!

Capital Factory, 701 Brazos Street
Participate in a Hack-a-thon with Health Tech Austin and help build software to address specific challenges of their selected non-profits. Teams will be formed to help Child, Inc., Alzheimer’s Association Capital of Texas, and the Austin Area Urban League.
